Quotes |

"Sometimes I want to do drugs because everyone
else is doing it and I want to fit in."
"I thought I could use drugs and lead a normal life – but I couldn't."
|
| Teen
Quotes |
|
“Drug's are everywhere. Students are
asked more than parents think – no matter where – it’s not safe.”
"Most kids don't care how safe it is, they only care about how high you
can get."
|
| Teen
Quotes |
|
“Teens
think they’re invincible, think ‘it can't happen to me.’ All
they think about is now.”
“Many kids who are
addicted don’t know it, and they deny that they’re addicted.”
|
| Teen
Quotes |
|
“Drug’s are especially easy to get and available locally – kids get money from their parents.”
“Be
alert to giving money – drugs are so accessible. Trust your
instincts and don't second guess yourself if you think you had $80 in
your purse, not $40.”

Local Data
|
The
Granite Bay
High School Substance Use Survey was conducted in April of 2009.
It surveyed
the
experience of 913 Granite Bay High School students, divided roughly
evenly between all grade levels. The generous participation
by
each of these students was very helpful in understanding local issues
and is very much appreciated. Thank you Granite Bay students. |

State Data
The
California Student Survey (CSS) is a voluntary, anonymous, and
confidential self-report survey of substance use, school safety,
harassment and violence, youth resilience factors, and health-related
behaviors. California law requires that the survey be
conducted every
two years among a representative statewide sample of students in grades
7, 9, and 11 in order to monitor and prevent adolescent risk behaviors
and promote positive youth development, health, and well-being. WestEd
has conducted the survey since 1989.

The
California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) is an anonymous, confidential
student survey of attitudes, health risk behaviors, and protective
factors. The CHKS is administered to students at grades five, seven,
nine and eleven. It enables schools and communities to
collect and
analyze data regarding local youth health risks and behaviors, school
connectedness, protective assets, and school violence.

| Note:
The CSS
and CHKS surveys are very similar. The CSS is designed to be
a
representative survey of the entire state, whereas the CHKS is a
collection of surveys administered in various localities in order to
monitor local trends. |
National
Data
For
the past 14
years, CASA has surveyed American teens to track their attitudes on
drugs and alcohol and those, like parents, who influence them. In that
time, through its unique annual "back-to-school survey" CASA has
identified factors that increase or decrease the likelihood of teen
substance abuse.

Monitoring
the Future is an ongoing study of the behaviors, attitudes, and values
of American secondary school students, college students, and young
adults. Each year, a total of approximately 50,000 8th, 10th and 12th
grade students are surveyed (12th graders since 1975, and 8th and 10th
graders since 1991).

The
Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) monitors priority
health-risk behaviors among youth and young adults. The YRBSS includes
a national school-based survey conducted by the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) and state governments. This
survey
includes alcohol and drug use information within an array of much
broader
health-risk measures. |
